Abstract:
Aegean finds are rarely encountered in Central Anatolia, the heartland of the Hittite Empire. The few Aegean finds made at the Hittite capital of Boǧazköy recently were augmented by a sherd of a Mycenaean Kylix, dating to Late Helladic I1IA-B. The sherd was already found during the campaign of 1970 west of temple 1 in the Lower City, but was only recognized in 2002. While the sherd itself is not remarkable, the fact that it represents the first Mycenaean vessel from Boǧazköy calls for attention. Together with the already well known Mycenaean vessels from Masat Höyük and newly discovered Mycenaean sherds from Kusakli near Sivas it challenges the previously held view that the assumed absence of Aegean finds in Central Anatolia could be explained by a trade embargo that the Hittite Empire had imposed on the Mycenaean World.
