dc.description.abstract A general objective of the study was set at evaluating the feasibility of exploiting the submarine springs in the Chekka Bay, Lebanon, taking into consideration technical, economic, social, and environmental aspects of such a project. The field work consisted of a geological-hydrogeological investigation, a marine study, and a socio-economic analysis. The karstic features of the region facilitate the occurrence of submarine springs. Field measurements of water discharge indicated that a substantial amount of water could be available from the exploitation of the submarine springs. Off-shore exploitation of these springs would however face implementation problems as it is technically difficult, financially expensive, and yields a qualitatively unacceptable water since analysis of water samples indicated a relatively high level of salinity. A more suitable alternative would be to tap the submarine springs inland through wells of differing depths. The financial feasibility of the latter alternative has been confirmed through a cost-benefit analysis. The project would be feasible even at a low water price of 36 cents per cubic meter.
