Environment, Activism, and Design: Emerging Practices in Lebanon

Abstract

In Lebanon, in recent years, design activism has been at the heart of the local discipline, where designers and architects have resorted to advocacy as the necessary agency to create change, in a country where the unprecedented level of economic stagnation, social and environmental deterioration, has reached its worst. Several initiatives whether at a personal level, a practice level, or an academic level, have lately grown strongly turning designers into active agents, expanding their roles beyond the bounds of their immediate disciplines to intervene at wider social and environmental levels.
