In the recent years, Islamist movements in the Arab world have played an important role in social change, where their presence goes beyond their religious role, toward contribution on the social and political debates. This thesis will study the Islamic discourse through Friday sermons, in Egypt and Kuwait. I will be interested in the way they address political and social issues. Additionally, although the Ministry of Awqaf in both named countries has chosen to mandate unified Friday sermons, some Islamist preachers have not been abiding to that. Thus, this research study will shed light on both the Ministry’s unified Friday sermons as well as the transgression. I will conduct a content analysis of sermons that I collect them through internet focusing more particularly on the Salafi movements in these countries, as well as the official website of ministries of Awqaf. Many questions will be raised: What are the main political and social themes used in their Friday sermons? How have these themes been treated? What are the fundamental differences between ministry’s speech and the other ones? This study will show the dominance of the Awqaf among the sermons and the attempts to overcome this hegemony.
