Abstract
Among Syrian refugees in Lebanon, preterm births are the main cause of newborn morbidity and mortality, accounting for 26% of infant deaths under one year of age. Strategies to lower avoidable preterm births and enhance mother and newborn health outcomes are described in this policy brief. It is imperative to improve access to prenatal and postnatal care. In addition to health insurance, financial incentives like vouchers and the elimination of user fees can improve access to critical care services. Enhancing the quality of care through primary health centre accreditation and the incorporation of evidence-based standards will guarantee improved pregnancy outcomes by increasing patient satisfaction and provider competence. Task shifting can increase access to prenatal care, lower the number of premature births, and provide nurse-led or midwife-led care in primary healthcare centres. Lastly, community-based outreach programs that emphasise antenatal care and family planning will raise knowledge of issues and encourage healthier pregnancy habits, which will further lower the number of preterm births. When paired with education sessions and home visits, these interventions can enable communities to better manage maternal health. System-wide collaboration, healthcare professional training, and patient needs consideration are necessary for successful implementation.
