Automated dispensing cabinets are quickly becoming the solution of choice for medication dispensing and administration. They are highly computerized medication storage cabinets that improve safety, availability and medication administration efficiency. Aligned with its 2020 vision, the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) launched the Pyxis Carefusion automated dispensing cabinets on May 4th, 2018 which changed the whole landscape of medication administration at the medical center. Registered nurses at the AUBMC were the front line users of this new system; hence, their training was pivotal in the success or failure of the launch. With that being said, the nurses faced several problems in handling the various processes of the Pyxis cabinets, which affected the quality of care given to the patients. This was tracked back to the training program they acquired. Hence, this case study aims to examine the efficacy of training done for the registered nurses at AUBMC regarding the Pyxis automated dispensing cabinets. The names and scenarios in this case study are ficticious. It would be significant for both graduate and undergraduate courses on human resource and management; specifically in the training and development aspect. The students are required to analyze the training that was done at AUBMC and draw recommendations for areas of improvement which would improve the efficacy of the training.
