Abstract
In Lebanon, iodine deficiency is still a major public health concern that affects people of all ages and can have detrimental effects on health. The efficacy of Law 178/2011, which requires salt iodisation, has been hampered by poor implementation and insufficient monitoring. Numerous tactics are suggested to address this. In order to make clear the duties of a multi-sector national committee, the iodine fortification criteria, and the possible necessity of salt fortification in food processing, Law 178/2011 should be amended or replaced. The second step is to improve the infrastructure for universal salt iodisation, which includes consumer awareness campaigns, standard alignment with international requirements, and assistance for the salt sector. Lastly, attaining appropriate iodine nutrition requires the establishment of strong monitoring and assessment mechanisms to track iodine levels in salt throughout the stages of manufacturing, retail, and consumption. Additional expenses for producers and the government's capacity to prioritise and execute the law in the face of conflicting health goals are obstacles to implementation. To guarantee adequate iodisation and enhance iodine nutrition in Lebanon, these obstacles must be removed.
