The selfish samaritan
Abstract
The primary motivation behind this paper is to study the reputational concerns behind donations to charity. We develop an experiment in which students’ donations are compared in situations where they are anonymous to situations when they are made public. We find that anonymity decreases the levels of contribution. Our results show that the degree of familiarity between the donor and the rest of the participants significantly affects their attitudes towards charity, this effect varying by gender.
