dc.description.abstractDespite the recommendation by the American Heart Association (AHA 2015 guidelines), that targeted temperature management (TTM), with a temperature between 32°C and 36°C selected and achieved, then maintained constantly for at least 24 hours; on out of hospital cardiac arrest patients who remain comatose with return of spontaneous circulation; its clinical application remains low. This review discusses the historical background in medical practice, the controversies regarding: the timing of the hypothermia, the proper temperature that should be achieved, the techniques to achieve the desired temperature and, eligible patients. The conclusion is that further studies need to be conducted to find conclusive evidence for these controversies and to standardize the manner of TTM administration in clinical practice. © 2017, American University of Beirut.
