Athlete–Public Partnership: Q&A Dataset from Focus Group Meetings

Abstract

This dataset reconstructs participant contributions from four Athlete–Public Partnership focus group sessions (Lebanon, October 2–9, 2023; N = 50; IRB SBS-2023-0140) in question-and-answer format. Each entry presents the question first — either verbatim from the researcher's original six-item agenda or reconstructed from emergent participant-initiated discussion — followed by an anonymized, paraphrased participant response. Where multiple participants responded to the same question, each response appears as a separate entry under the same Q, preserving the focus group's dialogic character rather than collapsing responses into a survey summary. Participants are labelled A, B, C and so on per session, with identifiers resetting at each session boundary. The sports medicine specialist in Session 4 is identified by role rather than a letter, as their contributions are clinically distinctive and their role is explicitly documented in the source notes; anonymizing them further would distort the data without adding protection. Each session is divided into two sections. The first covers researcher-initiated questions. The second, headed Participant-Initiated Directions, presents questions reconstructed from emergent discussion themes that did not appear in the original researcher agenda. Dataset notes at the close of the document make the reconstruction methodology explicit for any reviewer or IRB enquiry.

Description

The Verbatim Q&A from Focus Group Meetings is a dataset describing 4 focus group sessions which were conducted in Lebanon between October 2 and October 9, 2023, as part of the Athlete–Public Partnership study (N = 50; IRB SBS-2023-0140). This document presents the raw data from those sessions in question-and-answer format. Questions appear first. Where a question originates from the researcher's original six-item agenda, it is reproduced verbatim. Where a question was not part of the original agenda but arose from participant-initiated discussion, it has been reconstructed from the verbatim meeting notes to reflect the substantive direction participants took the conversation. Both types are clearly separated within each session. Participant responses are paraphrased to protect anonymity while preserving the content and specificity of each contribution. Participants are identified by letter within each session; identifiers do not carry across sessions. The sports medicine specialist who participated in Session 4 is identified by professional role, as this role is already documented in the source material and distinguishing it from the athlete and coach participants is necessary for accurate interpretation of the responses. No demographic information, institutional affiliations, or identifying details have been retained. The dataset notes at the end of the document describe the reconstruction process and the decisions made in assembling this record.
