Tmd-related headache and facial pain: A review

Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are very prevalent conditions in the general population. They are defined as a number of clinical problems involving masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and associated structures. In many cases, headaches and facial pain can occur in the same patient. Recent studies have demonstrated the comorbidity between TMD and headaches, considering them as distinct entities that interact and serve as perpetuating and aggravating factors. This article provides an overview of temporomandibular disorders and depicts how these issues are correlated to headache, as evidenced by current research findings. Clinical significance: This article sheds the light on the correlation between TMD and headache, and it serves as a relevant tool in order to achieve the most suitable management of this pathological entity. © 2018 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
