dc.description.abstract Currently, the Middle East is facing a crisis in the oil and gas industry. Responding to the need of shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy, several countries across the region started deploying renewable energy technologies. However, different barriers to deployment are taking place. This dissertation presents an overview of renewable energy development in the world embracing hydropower, wind and solar energy, in addition to the implementation of those technologies in several countries in the Middle East. The countries under study in this thesis are Lebanon, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The study also aims to evaluate the deployment policies of renewable energy according to four indicators: effectiveness, efficiency, reliability and institutional capacity. A comparative matrix analytical tool between selected countries in the Middle East is used to facilitate the analysis of the performance of renewable energy deployment. Upon conducting the analysis, it was found that United Arab Emirates is leading the Middle East due to the implementation of the public competitive bidding policy.
