HALLAJIAN AFTERLIVES IN MODERN LITERATURE

Abstract

This paper examines the modalities of Hallaj’s reception in the modern era, in comparison with some of the approaches adopted in the reception of Arabic literary works and characters, which have become universal.

In the study of Hallaj’s reception, the paper presents thirteen manifestations / afterlives of him depicted in modern works that involve him (Al-Hallaj, Anti-Hallaj, Doppel-Hallaj, Macto-Hallaj, Politi-Hallaj, Mysti-Hallaj, Alter-Hallaj, Cosmo-Hallaj, Sur-Hallaj, Super-Hallaj, Amo-Hallaj, Christo-Hallaj, Indo-Hallaj), and analyzes the different contexts that produced these manifestations in the modern era, whether political, orientalist, social, or religious.

Then, the paper examines how these manifestations / afterlives have evolved over time to occupy a literary global position that may not be compatible with the historical Hallaj, and monitors the roles of Hallajian text and persona/character in developing this universal position, and compares these two roles (text vs persona) for each manifestation.

Finally, it provides, in the light of the foregoing, a detailed study of three plays involving Hallaj in the modern era.

يتناول هذا البحث كيفيات تلقي الحلاج في العصر الحديث، مقارنا مع بعض المقاربات المعتمدة في تلقي أعمال أو شخصيات من الأدب العربي وصلت إلى العالمية.

ويعرض البحث، في دراسته لتلقي الحلاج، ثلاثة عشر تجليا \ تمظهرا له في أعمال حديثة تناولته (الحلاج، الحلاج الضدي، الحلاج المتعدد، الحلاج الشهيد، الحلاج السياسي، الحلاج الصوفي، الحلاج الغيريّ، الحلاج العالمي، الحلاج السريالي، الحلاج الأسطوري، الحلاج العاشق، الحلاج المسيحاني، الحلاج الهندي)، محللا السياقات المختلفة التي أنتجت هذه التجليات في العصر الحديث، أكانت سياسية، استشراقية، اجتماعية، أو دينية.

ثم يرصد البحث كيف تطورت هذه التجليات \ التمظهرات عبر الزمن لتحتل مكانة أدبية عالمية قد لا تتوافق مع الحلاج التاريخي، متقفّيا دور النص ودور الشخصية في صنع هذه العالمية، ومقارنا بين الدورين في كل من التجليات.

وأخيرا، يقدم البحث، على ضوء ما سبق، دراسة مطولة لثلاث مسرحيات تناولت الحلاج في العصر الحديث.
