CONFLICT RELATED URBANIZATION OF AL-HAWASH IN WADI AL-NASARA: A STRATEGIC COUNTER INTERVENTION

Abstract

This thesis investigates an urban design approach towards revitalizing the agricultural and architectural heritage. The study explores urban growth management while preserving the identity and character of the town of Al-Hawash Syria. This thesis adopts a sustainable urban design approach in dealing with the issue of post displacement urban sprawl. This approach confronts the peri-urban landscape and tackles its ecological, social, and economic dimensions.

The case of Al-Hawash in the city of Homs, Syria, proved the possibility of preserving valuable agricultural lands within residential zones while considering the need to stitch the raptured fabric. The goal of this thesis is to reintroduce hierarchy to the spatial structure of the town while strengthening its identity by linking it to both built and rural heritage. Moreover, it intends to reverse the damage of the pre-conflict master plan and unregulated rapid development during the conflict that resulted in the image of concrete jungle-like landscapes.

The rationale behind having a strategic urban design intervention in the old town of Al-Hawash is to create a smooth transition between the natural and built environment and further between the old fabric and new developments while taking into consideration locals’ requirements in this peri-urban area. It responds to the social need for community recreational areas and the ecological need for preservation and the economic needs by tackling the commercial strip. Ultimately, it aims at improving the image, livability, and heritage of the site.
