الحساب بين العلم والمال: إنتاج الأخلاق والمكان في أدب منتصف القرن التاسع عشر في بيروت، ١٨٤٨-١٨٨٥

Abstract

بحثت هذه الرسالة في العلاقة التي نشأت بين علم الحساب والإنتاج الأدبيّ في بيروت في القرن التاسع عشر. فرصدت موقع الحساب من خطابات إنتاج المعرفة من جهة، وموقعه من الإنتاج الأدبيّ من جهة أخرى، مركّزةً على التقاطع بين المعرفة والأخلاق والمكان. ونظرت في تبلْوُر علم الحساب أكاديميًّا في بيروت منذ العام ١٨٤٨، بالتزامن مع نشر مؤلَّف بطرس البستاني (١٨١٩-١٨٨٣) كشف الحجاب في علم الحساب والتغيّرات اللاحقة عليه. وقد عُنيت تحديدًا بقراءة مكانة علم الحساب في المجال التجاريّ والجغرافيّ، تمهيدًا لتحليل مكانته في الفضاء الروائي. فحلّلت الرسالة معاني البنية النصّيّة وفقًا لسياقات أخلاقيّة وجغرافيّة وتاريخيّة، اتخّذت شكلها انطلاقًا من المبادئ الحسابيّة.

وقد قدّم الفصل الأوّل من هذه الرسالة، قراءةً في تاريخ علم الحساب في بيروت ابتداءً من منتصف القرن التاسع عشر. أمّا الفصل الثاني، فدرس الشرعة الأخلاقيّة التي أسّس لها الحساب في البيئة البيروتيّة، وارتباطها بالمال والهندسة. أمّا الفصل الثالث، فقدّم قراءة نقديّة لرواية منتصف القرن التاسع عشر في بيروت؛ وهي قراءة قامت على تحليل النصّ من حيث خضوعه للفكر الحسابيّ والماليّ الذي نظّم بدوره شبكة العلاقات في الحبكة الروائيّة. وظهر في هذا التحليل، اعتماد الشخصيّات الروائيّة على الفكر الحسابيّ الماليّ في مختلف قراراتهم، ومحاولتهم التخلُّص من هاجس الدَّين وعشوائيّة التعامل مع الحسابات الماليّة. وهذا الخوف من الإخفاق في الحسابات الماليّة، جعل الرواية مبنيّة على بنية مضمرَة يحكمها الدَّين. فتحرّكت الأحداث في إطار هذه البنية، وفي حين نجحت بعض الشخصيّات في التخلُّص من الدَّين، تمادت أخرى فيه حتّى الإفلاس. وقرأت هذه الدراسة في المداخلة الحسابيّة في الرواية، مظهرًا من مظاهر الحداثة الرأسماليّة في بيروت. فقد دخلت المعارف الحسابيّة هيكلة العلاقات الإنسانيّة والثقافيّة والجغرافيّة، وشكّلت مجتمعةً رؤية حداثويّة للفنّ الروائيّ والبنية النصّيّة في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر في بيروت.

This thesis examines the relationship between arithmetic and literary production in Beirut during the nineteenth century. It analyzes the role of arithmetic in the discourses of both knowledge and literary production focusing on the intersection between knowledge, ethics, and place. The thesis, thus, emphasizes the development of arithmetic academically in Beirut since 1848, in conjunction with the publication of Buṭrus al-Bustānī (1819-1883), Kashf al-ḥijāb fī ʿilm al-ḥisāb and its subsequent changes.

Arithmetic has transcended the commercial and geographical sphere and interfered in the fictional space, organizing meaning in the textual structure according to ethical, geographical and historical contexts. The first chapter offers a reading of arithmetic’s history in Beirut starting from the mid nineteenth century. The second chapter explores the moral code, shaped in Beirut and influenced by arithmetic, drawing the connection between moral code, money, and architecture. The third chapter exposes a close and critical reading of two novels of the second middle of the nineteenth century. The reading will be based on analyzing the narrative plot with arithmetic and financial vision.

In this analysis, characters appear to depend on financial computational thought in their various decisions. However, these characters live with the fear of debt, which is the pinnacle of arbitrariness in dealing with money and arithmetic. This fear of failure in the financial field made the novel based on the substructure of debt. Narrative events, move within the debt frame until the characters succeed in defeating it or ends up broke. This study suggests that the arithmetic intervention in the novel is a manifestation of capitalist modernity in the nineteenth century in Beirut, where arithmetical knowledge penetrate the structuring of human, cultural and geographical relations; forming together a modernist vision of fictional art and textual structure in the second middle of nineteenth century in Beirut.
