"تبقوا تذكرونا" “Remember us”
This publication tackles the emigration of the Lebanese.
Over the past year, and especially after the Beirut Blast, some of my family members or friends had to leave the country and this really made me realize how the Lebanese are always leaving Lebanon ever since the beginning of our history. Every Lebanese person knows at least one friend or family member that emigrated be it for many different reasons. This is why I decided to work on this publication which I found was the best medium to gather my information. I created this book, and its audience is each and every Lebanese person that left or that is considering it. This publication gathers five different stories with a timeline that goes from 1914-1929-1957-2006-2020. I chose to work with stories from different periods of time to highlight the fact that emigration is a very common thing in our community and has always been.
In some cases, the people in the stories did eventually come back but in others they never did. What these stories have in common is that they are people that are related to me, or that I know personally, or my ancestors, or related to my friends and they took place in times of wars or conflicts or even occupations because these are the times where emigration is the most common. |
