Quality improvement project : progress in and priorities for integrating research findings and evidence-based practice into nursing practice at AUBMC - Mohammad Kolailat.

Abstract

Poorly informed decision making is one of the reasons services can fail to be delivered in an optimal way. It can also result in less efficient, ineffective and inequitable availability of health services. The use of evidence-based practice to inform our actions is a critical and achievable way to improve health system performance.The main aim of this project is to shed light on the barriers for implementing research results by front line nurses. This project also identifies all protocols applied at AUBMC according to evidence based practice (EBP).The study is a quality improvement study that relies on a questionnaire distributed randomly to 185 front line nurses at AUBMC on 14 different floors to help explore and better understand the impact of how are Research Findings integrated in EBP and what are the barriers and challenges as perceived by nurses. An interview was also done with 9 nurses with managerial posts to explore their point of view of research and EBP at AUBMC.Analysis revealed that the majority of front line nurses are aware of the importance of EB. Yet the majority of nurses face significant barriers applying research findings to practice.The findings of this study show the need for strategies to better assist nurses to implement EBP at AUBMC. They show as well that although nurses and nurse mangers agree on the importance of EBP, they diverge in their perceptions of how well AUBMC nurses are supported to implement EBP.
