The food grocery industry is one of the biggest employers in the service sector worldwide with the human factor being core to its business model and a key determinant of success. On the other hand, the supermarket industry has historically suffered from a bad reputation in terms of the low financial compensation, the long and irregular working hours and the low potential for career advancement that characterize the employment in the industry. Additionally, the Lebanese grocery sector is suffering from the increased competition and the pressure stemming from the feared recession and the slowdown in the economic activity in the country. In light of the above mentioned factors, this study explores the HRM practices that are currently implemented in the grocery sector in Lebanon and identifies the extent to which, the key players capitalize on their human resources as a source of competitive advantage. |
