Worldwide, the growing demand for environmental protection and the need to build a sustainable society, has led many higher education institutions to realize the role of education as a key promoter to sustainable development. The ISO 14001 standard (EMS) has become one of the major tools in improving environmental performance and promoting a culture of sustainability. ISO 14001 is the standard process that guides the implementation of EMS and aims to organize environmental work of organizations. Although ISO 14001 is widely-known in developed countries, its adoption in higher education institutions of developing countries is still very shy. Due to the high number of students in Lebanon and the various environmental concerns that can be associated with the Lebanese higher education institutions; there is a need to promote for ISO 14001 as an instrument for environmental protection. This research project aims at identifying and evaluating the prospects and challenges facing the adoption of ISO 14001 in higher education system of Lebanon and examining corresponding barriers, drivers and incentives associated with the implementation of the standard. A hybrid methodology was conducted to collect primary and secondary data. The primary data were collected using a field survey questionnaire and the secondary data were collected using two in-depth interviews. The results revealed a significant lack of knowledge and sense of responsibility towards ISO 14001 standard and environmental accountability. Improving educational and social responsibility, improving environmental performance and enhancing institution image are the most salient drivers to adopt ISO 14001. The main perceived barriers for acquiring the standard are unclear benefits of ISO 14001, the lack of government support and not seen as a priority by top management.
