dc.description.abstract Qatar holds the world’s third largest natural gas reserves behind Russia and Iran. It is the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, though only producing it since 1997. Qatar devoted resources to develop the infrastructure for the production and export of natural gas. Revenues from oil and natural gas amount to 60percent of the country’s GDP and energy consumption relies on natural gas for 79percent. In this thesis I will analyze the allocation of natural gas in Qatar to domestic and export markets. In Chapter 2 I will review the relevant literature, concentrating on international cases, such as the case of Russia. In Chapter 3, the Qatari case will be presented. It will include detailed information about the current situation and pricing of natural gas in Qatar. Chapter 4 will discuss current and future allocation of Qatar’s natural gas production to domestic consumption and exports. It presents projections of natural gas production, consumption and net exports through 2035. It offers a parallel presentation for Russia for comparison purposes and to highlight the significance of the volume of domestic natural gas use in the allocation equation. Chapter 5 will offer a conclusion.
